WORK BASED LEARNING

The Marine Society offers seafarers a route through which they may top up their HND or FD (Foundation Degree) into a Bachelors degree, or for senior officers with a Class 1 Certificate, to top up to a Masters degree by a distance learning programme.

This innovative approach focuses on nurturing a learner’s analytical and evaluative skills as well as reinforcing seafarers’ professional skills and competencies. This offers the student a qualification which is widely recognised and  transferable within and beyond the maritime sector.

These ground-breaking programmes don’t require attendance at a college, can be completed in a minimum of eight months, are tailored to individual need, fully tutor-supported and aren’t dependent on access to the internet.

The offer is made in conjunction with the Institute for Work Based Learning at Middlesex University.

WBL and Professional Studies programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels give a generic framework that enables individuals to bring the specific content of their own work and/or other life experience to life, in programmes that are at a level suitable for them.

All programmes offer the opportunity to customise your programme of study, placing you in charge of your learning experience. You can tailor the content of your programme to your work and career needs, in partnership with the University and your employer (where applicable).

Most candidates are part-time mature people, who undertake WBL and Professional Studies programmes alongside  employment for continuing professional development purposes. This is excellent news for seafarers. It means they don’t need to come ashore to study and can  continue their careers at sea, it also offers considerable cost-savings.

To be eligible for the BA/BSc programme you will need to have  completed the relevant HND or Foundation Degree qualification.

To be eligible for the MA/MSc programme you will need to hold a Class 1 Certificate of Competency

Full tutor support is offered via email, fax, phone or post. Internet access is not a requirement.

This programme is seafarer-friendly and sympathetic to lifestyle constraints and external factors that may cause study interruptions.
