College of the Sea

What's the subsidised scheme for seafarers about...

The Marine Society College of the Sea is offering seafarers and the SCC a great opportunity to get a valuable qualification in using a computer – at a subsidised cost to the individual.

The aim of this scheme is to bring IT to seafarers and the advantage of the ECDL qualification is that it is ideally suited for study at sea.

This courseware assumes no prior knowledge of working with computers. But it is also useful for those familiar with using e-technology and there is the added bonus of an internationally recognised qualification at the end of it if you wish.

To be awarded the ECDL you have to pass seven modular tests on the ways computers handle everyday office tasks.

These will need to be taken ashore in the UK. Arrangements can be made for them to take them at a test centre near to your home.

But some may wish to just complete the course and not bother about doing the tests.

So we have designed our course provision to cater for both eventualities – those who wish to do the course and acquire the knowledge, and those who want to do the course, the tests, and get the qualification…
