CAREERS AT SEA

A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY

The Merchant Navy is the collective term for the many commercial companies engaged in maritime trade. It is part of a wider maritime industry of shipping, ports and maritime business services.

The size of the UK Merchant Navy has increased significantly in the last decade and continues to expand. Today it directly employs 96,000 people, but the wider British maritime services sector contributes £25 billion to the nation's economy and supports 500,000 jobs.

With new entrant officer trainee numbers are at a record high there are lots of exciting opportunities for capable and enthusiastic people to train to manage and operate modern and technically sophisticated ships, offering great prospects for a rewarding career in a variety of roles.

Our shipping industry depends upon a core of highly competent and professional British seafarers who are respected worldwide.

The Marine Society encourages young people to consider a career at sea and we offer impartial guidance on the opportunities available and free advice to give a feel for what is involved in a career at sea.
