GCSE/A LEVEL EXAM RESULTS SUMMER 2011

Our unique dispensation to enter students for GCSE/A level examinations and arrange for them to be sat wherever seafaring learners find themselves at exam time illustrates our commitment to ensuring they receive the very best support.

This year’s results at GCSE and A Level demonstrate just how effective we are in providing that.

Overall pass rates and proportion of learners achieving the highest grades were again well above the national average.

Results

78 GCSE/A Level examinations were arranged this summer.

87.5% of those sitting were Royal Navy/Royal Marines who had been studying and took examinations either at sea, in overseas embassies, or in operational theatres in Iraq and Afghanistan. The remainder were serving with the RFA/Merchant Navy.

23% of students achieved the top Grade A/A* at GCSE level (2011 national average 23.2%).

Overall pass rate (achieving Grades A to C) was 94.4% (2011 national average 69.8%).

Currently there are 443 seafarer students studying with us at GCSE/A Level.

"Our learners deserve to be congratulated on their achievements. Studying and sitting exams whilst holding down a demanding job at sea is fraught with complications: constant noise, perpetual vibration and motion and short notice deployments doesn't begin to cover it.

It's our privilege to help. Most of our students study because they need a pass grade for promotion. No other organisation matches the bespoke service we're able to deliver."

GCSEs A Levels 2011

Matthew Winwood, 26, a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy had been studying an IGCSE in Chemistry.

Two days prior to the first exam, changes in his work schedule meant that he'd be nearer London at the time of his exam. We swiftly rearranged his first exam to take place in London and awaited further information with regards the second exam. Again a couple of days prior to the exam we were informed that Mark had been posted at short notice to HMS Bulwark. Yet again we were able to act swiftly and arrange for the exam to take place onboard. He achieved a Grade B. Well done, Matthew!

Adam, currently serving on active service in the Royal Marines, is half way through two A level qualifications with the Marine Society.

He sat his AS level exams in English Language & Literature and Religious Studies and was awarded grades B and A respectively. Adam is now intending to sit the remainder of his exams in January 2012.
